These images were taken in natural light outside the studio. The sun was bright on the other side of the street but this side in shadow and that provided the even lighting I wanted to get the best from her expression. I liked the black and white look to enhance the texture in the background without it being a distraction. I shot on an aperture of f2.8 so that she was sharp but the background started to blur out a little. It's called a shallow depth of field and is ideal for portraiture to concentrate the attention on the subject. A little bit of wind coming along the street moved her hair around for dramatic effect. A lot cheaper than taking a big fan outdoors! I do shoot portraits in bright sunshine but love finding soft even light like this to work in too.
